Police have NC State University student Andrew Thomas Graney in custody, charged in connection with “a dozen shootings this week on or around Interstate 40 in Raleigh.” Apparently, shooting up cars on the freeway, along with a few houses, was just another game to the anthropology major. He’s going to have a hard time getting access to Xbox in prison.
University student arrested
Early Friday morning, November 8, police in Raleigh, North Carolina, “arrested an NC State University student in connection to a dozen shootings.”
They all happened “this week on or around Interstate 40.” Officials named 23-year-old Andrew Thomas Graney. Motive is unknown, at this time.
The anthropology student faces charges of “assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and firing a weapon into an occupied vehicle or dwelling.”
There were at least 12 separate shootings. That’s solid enough to hold him without bond. At least until his initial appearance in court.
When he was arrested, Graney was with “another person.” It’s not clear if they’re also a student at the college. Police ran Graney down in the 2400 block of Kentford Court by electronically trailing his cell phone and vehicle.
“The other person was released, and their identity has not been released.” Cops were well supplied with warrants when they “searched Graney’s Hyundai Sonata and seized a couple of weapons.”
Handgun and ammo
Authorities are reasonably certain they have the right suspect because they found all sorts of evidence in his Hyundai. An anthropology student doesn’t normally need “a handgun with a magazine” or “a guncase with live ammunition” for an ordinary night on the town.
They were especially convinced when they noticed all the “spent shell casings” mixed into another box of ammo.
Police will be really interested to learn what’s on the digital camera and silver laptop the student had with him. Local news outlets report that Graney’s car was picked up on surveillance video “in the area of the Centennial Ridge Way shooting.”
They didn’t have much trouble finding him. “Police said cell phone tower data was retrieved and the owner of Hyundai Sonata was found in the area after five of the incidents.”
According to the university, randomly shooting at people on and near the freeway isn’t part of the Anthropology curriculum. Graney was a senior who had been majoring in the subject since the fall of 2019.
Classmates are shocked that “a fellow student allegedly inflicted so much fear around the city.” The police are only starting their detective work and they’d be thrilled if anyone has any “security video that may have captured something from one of the shootings.“
