If you were born in the 1960s or 1970s and are a music or sports fan, there was no greater time to be alive.
As we were in our prime, so were many of the best music acts to ever take the stage.
For sports, we were lucky enough to see the changeover from old school to new school and in the process, witness legends in virtually every major sport.
One of those legends has decided to hang it up.
Stepping Away
Roger Federer, the man who has 103 singles titles, including 20 Grand Slam titles to his name, retired on Thursday.
There are players that rival him, such as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, but for my money, Federer was the best.
The man won six year-end championships, two Olympic medals, 20 Grand Slam titles, and is second on the all-time matches list behind only the great Jimmy Connors.
The only Grand Slam event he did not dominate during his two decades on the tour was the French Open, and I say that because he “only” won it one time.
More importantly, in an age when athletes often act like spoiled brats, Federer was usually the picture of class.
And when you talk about someone that made the game look effortless, well, there is no comparison.
He holds the record at Wimbledon with eight titles and is tied for the lead in US Opens with six.
Rather than have a whirlwind goodbye tour, he simply left a message on social media to say goodbye.
That is what GOATs do… they know they are great, so they do not need the adulation tour before departing the sport they love and have dominated for years.
Enjoy your retirement, sir, and thank you for so much amazing tennis over the years.
