Ever since DHS Secretary Mayorkas dropped the Disinformation Governance Board bombshell on the Hill, Biden and his administration have been under severe fire from Republicans.
They were not alone, either, as more than just a handful of Democrats thought the idea of the board was Orwellian in nature.
On Wednesday, reports broke that the administration has decided to put the board on hold, at least for now.
This will be a huge win for Republicans regardless of the spin the Biden administration tries to put on it.
Bye, Felicia
The board was doomed in terms of public perception right from the start.
When Biden named Nina Jankowicz as the board’s boss, all kinds of warning shots went off.
She has pushed her fair share of disinformation, so she is hardly qualified to be the top cop of disinformation.
After the announcement came down, Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.) and Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) stated, “The suspension of the DHS Disinformation Governance Board is by far the best decision that’s been made when it comes to this Orwellian entity. From its initially botched rollout, the ‘Ministry of Truth’ lacked a defined mission or even direction.
“It was clear it was a political tool to be wielded by the party in control.”
They continued, “This board was only successful in reinforcing that the Department of Homeland Security’s priorities are severely misplaced.
“When the border crisis is worsening daily, cyber-attacks from adversaries are threatening to cripple our critical infrastructure, the rise in violent crime is putting Americans across the country in danger, and disrupted supply chains are having devastating impacts on Americans, DHS is focused on policing Americans’ free speech.”
They concluded, “DHS isn’t managing its current mission set, why would we trust this same Department to unilaterally expand its mission and tell the public what is or is not truth?
“It’s time for this administration to focus on our national security, not making itself the ultimate arbiter of truth and speech.
“Homeland and Intelligence Committee Republicans will continue working to ensure this Board never gets off the ground.”
Democrats who backed the idea are already losing their minds and even some outlets, such as the Washington Post are unhappy with the decision.
Considering how many reports WaPo got wrong over the last five years, I would think the publication would be just as happy as Republicans that the idea has been shelved for the time being.
