Nobody is talking about why the tire off a jet aircraft exploded but the body of one victim is “unrecognizable.” Another Delta worker was also killed instantly with a third critically injured in the hospital. The press is calling it a “freak” explosion as solid details are still trickling in.
Freak tire explosion
The force of the exploding tire was so bad that 58-year-old aircraft maintenance worker Mirko Marweg was identified by his tattoos. The freak explosion left his body “unrecognizable,” family members relate.
Co-worker Luis Aldarondo, 37-years-old, also perished virtually instantly, “while another maintenance worker was left seriously injured.”
As related by Andre Coleman, “his family helped identify his father.” Marweg and Aldarondo were “killed on Tuesday as they were prepping a plane’s wheel components for maintenance at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.”

That would be August 27. “I wanted to view the body because I didn’t believe it was true. Neither did my mom,” Coleman explains. The tire was off the plane and being worked on in the wheel shop.
When the family wanted to view the remains, “the Clayton County Medical Examiner advised against it.” It was not a pretty sight. “Given the damage to his corpse, Coleman and his family could only identify Marweg through his tattoos and signature Mississippi State lanyard around his neck.”
It isn’t clear why the tire suddenly depressurized by exploding. Perhaps one of the victims was in the process of bleeding off the air, prior to removing it from the wheel. That information isn’t yet available.

Mr. Fix-It
The family informs the press that Mr. Marweg was an “Air Force veteran and handyman” they liked to call “Mr. Fix-It.” Coleman recalls “he was with his dad just two days before the incident, with Marweg helping to change the oil in his son’s motorcycle.”
Changing a tire should have been a routine job. “That’s the kind of dad he was. He was always there. My dad was an amazing guy, wonderful father, wonderful husband.”
Delta’s TechOps Chief of Operations, John Laughter, issued a formal statement to all the airline’s employees. The exploding tire rattled everyone.

“I’m deeply saddened to share that three TechOps team members were involved in an accident that took place early this morning in Atlanta TOC 3, Dept. 391 – Wheel & Brake Shop.”
The airline is investigating the tire to determine the cause of the explosion and aren’t saying a whole lot until the NTSB has a chance to crawl over the scene. “Tragically, two of our team members involved passed away and one other team member was seriously injured,” the COO added. “This news is heartbreaking for all of us.”
All the company is telling the public is “the wheel parts that were being disassembled for maintenance were not attached to the plane at the time of the explosion.” It doesn’t really matter but “the tire that exploded was from a plane that had traveled from Las Vegas to Atlanta on Sunday night.” OSHA will be investigating this one, as well.
