One of the major action heroes of the last four decades is stepping away from the big screen.
Bruce Willis has decided to retire.
The decision comes after his family revealed that he had been diagnosed with aphasia.
Stepping Away
Aphasia is a degenerative condition that impacts an individual’s cognitive health and ability to communicate.
The Mayo Clinic website defines it, saying, “It typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury but can also come on gradually from a slow-growing brain tumor or a disease that causes progressive, permanent damage (degenerative).”
Willis, who is 67 years old, was still cranking out movies, but they were hardly the caliber that we were used to seeing from him during his “Die Hard” days.
His family announced his decision to step away, which included Demi Moore, his ex-wife.
Moore and Willis divorced years ago on amicable terms and they have remained close while raising their daughters.
The family statement read, “Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.
“As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.
“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.
“We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him.
“As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”
