The Nassau County Police Department said its Homicide Squad is investigating remains located at 5:44 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, in a wooded area of Plandome Pond Park in Manhasset. Breitbart, citing NBC New York, reported that a boy running the trails with a track team spotted them in the brush.

An ABC 7 reporter said the team was from Manhasset High School.

Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the remains were female and that police do not believe anything criminal occurred.

Authorities are working to determine whether they are those of Shi Hua Xu, who has dementia and vanished after leaving her Great Neck home. She was not wearing her tracker, Breitbart reported.

Xu’s family identified a piece of clothing recovered at the scene as hers.

The report does not mention any DNA result or medical examiner finding.

Plandome Heights Mayor Kenneth Riscica said the teenager told detectives he was fine and hoped the discovery “brings closure to a family.”
