State prosecutors will dismiss the criminal case against pro-Palestinian protesters who broke into the Stanford University president’s office in 2024, under a deal reached Monday, KQED reports.

Shop NowDefense attorneys said the California attorney general’s office agreed to drop the charges in exchange for $51,000 in restitution and 100 hours of community service from each protester.
Prosecutors said they reached the deal with eight defendants.
It covers the five who went to trial, Hunter Taylor-Black, Maya Burke, Germán González, Taylor McCann and Amy Zhai, and three who had said they intended to plead guilty to misdemeanors.
The five were tried in January on felony conspiracy to trespass and felony vandalism.
The jury deadlocked, with 8 of 12 jurors favoring conviction on conspiracy and 9 of 12 on vandalism. Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen planned a retrial, but his office was barred from the case in May over a conflict of interest after he promoted it on a campaign fundraising website.
“Today’s a good day,” defense attorney Tony Brass said. Stanford spokesperson Luisa Rapport said the decision “rested with the California Attorney General’s Office, based on the evidence gathered.” Several protesters have already finished their service and are expected to see their cases dismissed in October.
