Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who voted to confirm Pete Hegseth, said Thursday the defense secretary should go — by impeachment if that is quickest.

Shop NowAsked by reporters whether he would encourage Republicans to support articles of impeachment against Hegseth, Tillis said: “I think I’m pretty well staked out on my assessment of Mr. Hegseth.
This is not personal… He needs to go, whether it’s impeachment or the most expedient route.”
Tillis had already broken with him publicly. In a September 2 post on X, he wrote: “I have never witnessed more inept management of the brave men and women who serve our country. [Hegseth] is intimidated by competence… I urge the President to find a new leader at the Pentagon.”
The eight articles were introduced in the House on Tuesday by Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, and concern Hegseth’s handling of military operations in Iran, Venezuela and Yemen. ABC News reported Massie read the 34-page resolution aloud on the floor for more than 67 minutes to force consideration.
Impeachment originates in the House; the Senate, where Tillis sits, would hold any trial. The Pentagon has defended Hegseth, press secretary Kingsley Wilson calling him “a transformative leader for the Department of War,” ABC News reported.
