Finally, something has happened to Vladimir Putin for the atrocities in Ukraine.
It is not quite nearly as severe as we are hoping for, but it is a start.
The United Nations has voted to suspend Russia from its UN Human Rights Council.
You Are Out!
We have to start thinking in baby steps here.
While the entire globe pretty much agrees what is happening in Ukraine is horrific, it will be quite some time before Putin and his military leaders are held accountable for their war crimes.
Actually, he may never be held accountable due to the lack of backbone by UN countries.
Having said that, the first step in the process is removing Russia from councils such as this one.
It is a significant statement by UN countries to hold Russia accountable.
In order for the removal to happen, it must be a two-thirds majority of voting countries.
All abstentions are not included.
Of the 117 countries that voted, 93 voted in favor of the suspension, while 24 voted in favor of Russia.
A total of 58 countries abstained.
The fact that 72 countries overall did not see fit to hold Russia accountable is rather disturbing, but that is a problem to deal with in the future.
Regardless, Russia has now become the second country to have its membership suspended, with Libya being suspended in 2011.
