One of the top GOP candidates in the Michigan gubernatorial race has been arrested and charged by the FBI.
Ryan Kelley, who rose atop polling after the two leading candidates were disqualified, has found himself in some serious legal problems.
After tipsters alerted the FBI, Kelley was arrested for his presence at the January 6 riot at the Capitol.
Game Over
How the election would have played out for Kelley remains a mystery, as the GOP ticket is a hot mess right now.
Several Republicans were booted off the ticket for what were reported as illegal signatures on their candidacy petition.
Kelley, who may be benefitting from having the same last name as former Attorney General Frank J. Kelley, roared to the top of the ticket.
His arrest, however, will probably dampen the enthusiasm for him.
The FBI has charged Kelley with misdemeanor charges for “committing violence against a person or property on restricted grounds, damaging federal property, disorderly conduct and entering a restricted building or grounds without permission.”
There are photos of Kelley outside the Capitol, pushing his way past officers, but there does not seem to be evidence at this time that he entered the building.
If that evidence eventually surfaces, the charges will be far more severe.
Even without those charges, however, I have to think that his race is over.
During the rally, according to an affidavit, Kelley stated, “Covid-19 was made so that they can use the propaganda to control your minds so that you think, if you watch the media, that Joe Biden won this election.
“We’re not going to buy it.
“We’re going to stand and fight for America, for Donald Trump.
“We’re not going to let the Democrats steal this election.”
The primary race is scheduled for August, so there is still time for all this to pan out.
Additionally, Donald Trump’s endorsement is still up for grabs.
