The motorsports world was absolutely stunned today by the death of Bobby East.

East, a former USAC Champion and Driver of the Year, was murdered at a gas station in California, the victim of a brutal stabbing.

East was only 37 years old.

Out of Control

Over the last year, we have seen more and more crimes committed at gas stations.

From vicious attacks to carjackings and everything in between, they have become targets for nefarious characters.

If that was the narrative that led to the death of East, we still do not know as the news just broke.

Police have announced Trent William Millsap as a person of interest in the case.

East was an absolute legend in the midget-car series, winning his first race at the age of 16, then racing to the USAC championship in 2004, where he was also named the Driver of the Year.

He was the youngest national champion in history at the age of 19.

USAC stated, “East was phenomenal in USAC National Sprint Cars as well, most notably on pavement tracks.

“He tallied 15 wins in the series, with the first coming in 2003 at Ohio’s Mansfield Motorsports Speedway.

“He also prevailed at the Milwaukee Mile in 2005 in what remains as the last USAC Sprint Car race held on a one-mile track.”

When East moved over to NASCAR, he fared decently in the Craftsman Truck Series but struggled with a weak team in the Busch Series.

He returned to the truck series in 2008, that being his last full year in NASCAR.
