Russia reportedly waited to invade Ukraine after the 2022 Winter months Olympics at the behest of China.

Moscow presumably collaborated with Beijing on the timing of the invasion of Ukraine, though the magnitude to which Beijing knew about the attack plan is actually unclear.

The representative for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, denied the reports, stating there is zero basis for these allegations of coordination between the two countries.

We Did Not Know

Before the Olympics started, the two countries issued a joint statement.

It read, in part, “The Russian side reaffirms its support for the One-China principle, confirms that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and opposes any forms of independence of Taiwan.

“Russia and China stand against attempts by external forces to undermine security and stability in their common adjacent regions, intend to counter interference by outside forces in the internal affairs of sovereign countries under any pretext, oppose colour revolutions, and will increase cooperation in the aforementioned areas.”

At the start of this invasion, China had been silent, but the country has since denounced the invasion and come forward to demand that Russia come to the table.

Most of us believed that China would make its move on Taiwan after seeing the Biden response, but the fact that Russia is bombing civilian targets has been a real game-changer on this front.

With western allies now outraged, it could delay China’s plans on this front and delay or possibly shelve China’s move against Taiwan.
