Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin says his department has presented the Justice Department with what he called “a large case” in the federal investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Breitbart News reports. Omar has not been charged with any crime.

Shop NowIn remarks circulated on X, Mullin said Homeland Security Investigations did extensive work before handing the case to prosecutors, and that the Justice Department is now leading the investigation. He rejected claims that the probe is politically driven. “We’re not weaponizing, we’re not using political theater on this,” he said, adding that enforcement does not depend on a person’s office or party.
The investigation appears to reach beyond the congresswoman. In a court filing opposing the release of records, reported by Newsweek, prosecutors wrote that the investigation of the subject “and other individuals continues.” The filing did not name anyone else or describe their roles.
According to Breitbart, agents searched Omar’s Washington residence and, the same day, served a second warrant at the home of her sister, Sahra Noor, removing boxes of documents. Grand jury subpoenas have gone to more than a dozen recipients, relatives among them, according to the Associated Press. The grand jury weighing the evidence sits in Minnesota.
In October, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said “there are several investigations going on” involving Omar, and her office has opened a separate review of Omar’s financial disclosures. Mullin said at the time, in remarks reported by CBS News, that investigators expected to bring the matter before a grand jury.
Omar denies wrongdoing and has called the investigation politically motivated. She has also rejected the long-running allegation that she married her brother, a claim that has never been established.
The probe has drawn pushback. More than 170 House Democrats urged the Justice Department on Oct. 26 to drop the inquiry, citing a 2019 review under the first Trump administration that found insufficient evidence of wrongdoing. Former President Barack Obama wrote on X on Oct. 18 that the government cannot selectively target individuals because of their political beliefs.
Mullin maintains that anyone who broke the law would be treated the same way, regardless of party.
The timing has also drawn scrutiny. According to the court filing, Attorney General Todd Blanche approved the search warrant and attested that its timing was not meant to influence any election. Omar is on the ballot Tuesday, Nov. 3.
