You oppose Vladimir Putin, and you wind up in jail, and more than likely put to death.
Knowing that, seven Russian officials tried to organize a bit of a coup.
They planned to arrest and charge Putin with treason for the Ukraine invasion and its impact on the Russian economy.
For five of them, the plan backfired.
Creating the Movement
That these individuals were willing to risk their lives to move forward on this plan shows the degree of frustration and the divide within Russia’s government.
Russian expert Rebekah Koffler stated, “The fact that several municipal deputies in St. Petersburg, Putin’s hometown, came forward accusing [him] of treason and calling for his removal is highly significant.
“They know the punishment will be severe.
“They can easily face a death sentence based on Russian federal law.
“The significance of this act of defiance and dissent by a handful of Russian officials cannot be possibly overstated.”
After the seven Russian deputies made their move, they were all ordered to report to the police for “discrediting the army.”
Five of them were taken into custody, while the other two left without any charges.
Koffler continued, “It is possible they decided to risk their lives in order to build momentum among the Russian people to oust Putin, which is an incredibly difficult thing to do because Putin has surrounded himself with loyal security and intelligence operatives.
“Even two months ago, I would say that a coup in Russia is unlikely.
“Today, with Ukraine’s counter-offensive gaining steam and Russia having become as much of a pariah as North Korea, I don’t rule out the possibility of a regime change organized from within.”
The fact that Russia cannot put away Ukraine is clearly a problem, so I happen to agree with her assessment.
Now that people know there is opposition, we could see a much larger move made against Putin in the near future.
