The man who made a piano cool in rock and roll is no longer with us.
Jerry Lee Lewis passed away this weekend at his Mississippi home.
He was 87 years old.
The Killer
Lewis came about in an era when the music industry was turned on its ear.
Chuck Berry, Elvis, and Lewis were all considered pioneers in the 1950s in bringing showmanship to the stage.
Lewis was particularly interesting because he made the girls swoon from behind the piano.
Lewis had an amazing career, but it is scary to think what his career would have been had it not been temporarily derailed by a scandal.
Lewis married his 13-year-old cousin, leading to shows being canceled and his records being boycotted.
His career had been stalled, but he revived it as a country singer, then eventually re-emerged in rock and roll after his induction into the Hall of Fame.
For all the turmoil in his life, everything disappeared when he went on stage.
Lewis stated, “I was born to be on a stage. I couldn’t wait to be on it.
“I dreamed about it.
“And I’ve been on one all my life.
“That’s where I’m the happiest.”
Lewis has been having significant health struggles over the last few months, finally succumbing to them on Friday.
