The Secret Service is about to get a little help from their friends at the Pentagon. Even though the move is seriously overdue, both entities rushed out separate press statements on Thursday. They’re making a big fuss out of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s approval of a request to provide “additional military support capabilities.” The focus of extra support will be on “presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the upcoming election.

Eye on Secret Service

What happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, shows that somebody needs to keep an eye on the Secret Service to make sure they’re really doing their job. There’s not a word about that in the order Austin signed but everyone knows that’s the real reasoning behind the move.

Somebody with weapons to look over the bodyguard’s shoulders. There are a whole bunch of well informed people seriously wondering if the attempted assassination of Donald Trump was an “inside job.

According to Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh, “Austin had directed U.S. Northern Command to plan and provide support to the Secret Service at various locations during the election.

She carefully avoided giving any details on “the type of support that would be provided.” Like enough radios for everyone to be on the same frequency.

An unidentified Secret Service spokesperson later related that they have “strengthened” their “protective operations” after the miserable failure in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. Once and future President Donald Trump wasn’t expecting to get his ear pierced live on stage.

Security “came under scrutiny over concerns about how the suspect was able to access a nearby rooftop with a direct line of sight to where Trump was speaking.” It was like they had it reserved for his use.

Somebody needs to keep an eye on the Secret Service to make sure they’re really doing their job.

Help on the edges

As part of this effort, the Department of Defense is providing the U.S. Secret Service with additional assistance including logistics, transportation, and communications, through the 2024 campaign season.

Trump’s alleged bodyguards followed his would be killer around for an hour without attempting to stop him or prevent Trump from taking the stage.

Officially, the Secret Service is wringing their hands and admitting how “ashamed” they are of the security lapse. They’re embarrassed alright but they think throwing Kimberly Cheatle under the bus will take the heat off them for what happened.

The former director was all set to ride the scandal out until she showed up in front of Congress. Even the Democrats were howling for her head. Resign, they warned. Don’t make us throw you out.

One of the things which the public learned in the aftermath of Trump’s escape from the clutches of death. The Secret Service doesn’t have nearly enough people on the job to do it properly. The Trump campaign had been complaining about that for a long time.

It’s great that the Pentagon is providing logistical support so the agents can be out there actually guarding the bodies of their protectees. It’s even better that there’s someone around to keep the government honest. It was a vetted security professional who eliminated Hamas Commander Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. Allegedly by planting a bomb in his bedroom. Some say there are those on the Secret Service who would love to do the same to Donald Trump.
