Democrat Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke has put his campaign on hold.
The Texas Democrat was recently diagnosed with a bacterial infection.
So, he had to pause his campaign and return home to recover.
Bad Timing
This is about as bad as it gets for Beto.
His deficit in the most recent Dallas Morning News poll was seven percent, as he has continued to slide backward after a small push in July.
The Uvalde school shooting got him within five points, but people have cooled on him since.
For O’Rourke, every day counts, and this pause will hurt him as he was on a barnstorming tour to try to generate more excitement for his campaign.
O’Rourke announced, “After feeling ill on Friday, I went to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio where I was diagnosed with a bacterial infection.
“The extraordinary team there — from custodians to nurses and doctors — gave me excellent care and attention, including IV antibiotics and rest.
“While my symptoms have improved, I will be resting at home in El Paso in accordance with the doctors’ recommendations.
“I am sorry to have had to postpone events because of this, but promise to be back on the road with you as soon as I am able.”
The chances of O’Rourke winning are very slim.
He remains popular with progressives, but he is just too far left to draw any moderate support.
Abbott has taken his hits, even among conservatives, but there is no way any conservative would ever pull the handle for someone like O’Rourke in Texas.
He has failed in a Senate campaign. He has failed in a presidential campaign. And now he will fail in a gubernatorial campaign.
