While surprised to see an officer when he opened the door, he knew it had to have something to do with the nifty Project 2025 duffel bag he found. Rabidly progressive writer Malcolm Harris acted shocked when Gestapo from the D.C. Police rousted him Tuesday morning. His wife and sister are both criminal defense lawyers. Neither one were there and he makes a hobby out of being obnoxious, so didn’t say a word about his discovery to the police. That didn’t stop them from reporting he confessed.

An alibi for the bag

Conservative think tank Heritage Foundation had reported a duffel bag of theirs was missing in action. Since they filed an official report, an officer was dispatched to “find out what Harris knew about it.” They were also interested in “the documents that had been inside.

Harris stood on his Fifth Amendment rights and didn’t say a thing. “I don’t talk to the police, so we didn’t have a very long conversation,” he relates.

Pundits chuckle that “for the Heritage Foundation, it’s hard to imagine a worse person to come across a bag full of their internal files than Harris.

That’s because he’s “a Marxist journalist with a sense of humor and three books critiquing capitalism to his name.” He’s pretty much “dedicated his life to the opposite of Heritage’s conservative politics.

Fortunately for Heritage Foundation, there was nothing sensitive at all in the bag. It’s amazing the situation actually escalated to police involvement and that’s what makes this an interesting story. Harris has an alibi for how he came to possess the duffel.

When you hear the Foundation’s side of how a new intern’s welcome pack got misplaced, you’ll be just as shocked they bothered to report it.

He walked the bag to Heritage Foundation and turned it over to security.

The documents inside

Harris found the bag on Friday, August 9 and his cell phone location history backs his side of the story. He was leisurely walking to pick up a cheesecake.

At the corner of Sixth and E Streets NE, Harris passed a low-set ledge where he says people often leave free, unwanted items.” That was proven by someone leaving a succulent up for grabs as he re-enacted it for the press.

People in Capitol Hill just leave a bunch of really nice stuff out all the time.” He got a coffee machine once. The duffel looked cool and Project 2025 is both conservative and controversial so he couldn’t resist it. “For liberals of an ironic bent, the duffel bag could make the ultimate trophy.” He tried to auction it off on X, for charity of course. The post noted that “he might give the documents inside to a journalist.

There was nothing more interesting than a tin of Altoids in the welcome pack handed out to brand new interns. The only documents were one with “pictures and lengthy biographies of its interns” and a book.

It’s not like I found secret internal documents about Project 2025.” Heritage foundation saw the post and it cheesed them off, so they called the cops. They lost the bag about an hour before Harris found it, in a location that Harris’ phone hadn’t been to. Someone else probably dropped it where Harris found it. The person who reported the incident to police stated, she and another Heritage staffer “left a bag in a parking space while getting into their car.

They walked away for more gear and “when they returned to get it 30 minutes later, the bag was gone.” Police claim Harris “spontaneously admitted that he was in possession of the bag and that he would not return it.” That was a lie. He refused to even identify himself. To end the “ongoing police investigation,” he walked the bag to Heritage Foundation and turned it over to security, making sure to get a receipt and photos of the contents.
