When people think of Studio 54, they think Steve Rubell and A-list celebrities.
Rubell, however, only owned the club for its first few years.
After he and his partner ran into tax issues, Mark Fleischman swooped in to keep the party rolling.
After years of battling an unknown condition that impacted his mobility and speech, Fleischman decided to call it quits.
He recently traveled to Switzerland to have an assisted suicide and end his misery.
Life of Excess
About eight years ago, Fleischman started to have problems, but doctors could not nail down a diagnosis and treat him.
He lost the ability to walk and his speech was impaired, not to mention the pain and useless feeling that came overwhelmed him.
While doctors could not figure it out, Fleischman stated, “I liked to be high. So I would do drugs and drink.
“Possibly, this [health condition] is because I drank a lot and did drugs.”
On his assisted suicide, he stated, “My wife helps me get into bed and I can’t dress or put on my shoes.
“I am taking a gentle way out.
“It is the easiest way out for me.”
As noted above, Fleischman bought Studio 54 and kept the club opened until 1984, at which time he sold it.
By 1986, however, the magic was gone and so was Studio 54.
