Shop NowOfficers went to the home on the 200 block of Wellington Avenue at 11:45 p.m. for a well-being check after a family member said they could not reach their relatives.
Inside, they found three men and two women, all of whom appeared to have been shot at close range with a handgun. Two handguns were recovered at the scene.
Police said four of the dead were members of one family and the fifth was in a domestic relationship with the suspected shooter.
Police have not identified any of the five, have not said who fired the shots and have released no motive. Before Sunday night, police had received no calls for service at the home.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is assisting, and police say the incident appears isolated, with no threat to the public.
Neighbors described shock and disbelief. Rosa Berneo, who said she worked with the family for years, called them “very nice people.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Mundelein police at 847-968-4600.
