Breitbart reports border 'got-aways' below 40 a day, citing unnamed CBP source

Border Patrol “got-aways” — people detected crossing the southern border but not apprehended — have fallen below 40 a day, according to an unnamed source inside U.S. Customs and Border Protection who spoke to Breitbart.

The outlet reported roughly 550 known got-aways over the first two weeks of September, which it characterized as a 98.5 percent reduction from daily peaks above 2,000 recorded in 2023.

These figures have not been independently confirmed. CBP does not publish got-away counts among its routine enforcement statistics, and the agency provided no comment or confirmation for the report.

No other news organization has reported the September numbers. Breitbart attributed them to “a source within U.S. Customs and Border Protection” who said Border Patrol records showed the decline.

The named sources in the piece are local rather than federal. Kinney County Sheriff Brad Coe and Eagle Pass Assistant Police Chief Beto Garza described conditions they observe locally, with a CBP source telling the outlet agents now encounter only small groups.

Got-away estimates are internal figures compiled from sensor hits, camera footage and tracking, rather than counts of people processed, which makes them harder to verify than apprehension data and a recurring point of dispute between administrations.
