The most powerful and talented female tennis player to take the courts over the last three decades is going to call it quits.

Serena Williams, who, believe it or not, is only 40 years old, has announced she will retire from playing tennis after the U.S. Open.

This will be the end of a career that has spanned 27 years.

Plagued with Injury

Williams has not been the same since 2017, the year she won her last Grand Slam title.

Over the last five years, injuries have taken a toll, often preventing her from even being able to finish a tournament.

Even so, from the first time she stepped on to the court until now, she has amassed 73 tournament wins, including 23 Grand Slam titles, and 23 doubles titles, including 14 Grand Slam doubles titles.

She also won the gold in three different Olympics.

What she lacked in talent, and it would be hard to find a gap in her game when she was in her prime, she more than made up for with power.

There may have been better players in the past and there may be one in the future, but I doubt we will ever see another woman hit the court with this combination of skill and power to dominate the game for such a long period.

Her Grand Slam dominance lasted for 18 years, almost two full decades of putting fear into her opponents.

In announcing her retirement, she stated, “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction.”

She continued, “That time is always hard when you love something so much.

“My goodness do I enjoy tennis.

“But now, the countdown has begun.

“I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena.

“I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”

And we will miss seeing you on the courts.

Hopefully, she can notch at least one more win in the U.S. Open, as it would be horrible to see her go out in the first round in her final tournament.
