How often do we have an entertainer that has stretched over generations of family members that we can say truly impacted all of their lives?
Bob McGrath was one such man.
McGrath was an original member of the “Sesame Street” cast.
Sadly, he passed away this weekend.
McGrath was 90 years old.
A Wholesome Legend
Most of you reading this right now grew up on “Sesame Steet.”
Your kids watched it, and possibly even your grandchildren.
McGrath, along with Matt Robinson as Gordon, Loretta Long as Gordon’s wife Susan, and Will Lee as Mr. Hooper, was an original cast member.
The moment I saw his face, I remembered him with Telly Monster, Oscar the Grouch, and Cookie Monster.
After the show had been on the air for more than 20 years, McGrath stated, “The kids we were meant to reach, I think we’ve reached.
“They’ve grown up. They’re in their 30s now. They have kids of their own, our Sesame Seeds, and they come up to me and say: ‘Thank you very much. It made a major difference in our lives.’”
McGrath was signed in 1969 to launch the show, and remained with “Sesame Street” until 2017, having appeared in 470 episodes.
Upon his death, Sesame Workshop stated, “Bob embodied the melodies of Sesame Street like no one else, and his performances brought joy and wonder to generations of children around the world whether teaching them the ABCs, the people in their neighborhood, or the simple joy of feeling music in their hearts.
“A revered performer worldwide, Bob’s rich tenor filled airwaves and concert halls from Las Vegas to Saskatchewan to Tokyo many times over.
“We will be forever grateful for his many years of passionate creative contributions to Sesame Street and honored that he shared so much of his life with us.”
