It would appear as though “Game of Thrones” has made an appearance at an archeological dig site just outside of London.
UK archeologists found dozens of decapitated skeletons about an hour northwest of London.
This is the former location of an ancient Roman village, but it is now the site of a new HS2 construction project.
Off with Their Heads
In all, burial sites for more than 400 people were discovered.
Of those, about 10 percent had been decapitated.
Why they lost their heads is obviously a mystery right now, but best guesses are that they were either criminals or outcasts.
What caught everyone’s attention was the matter in which these bodies were buried, with the skulls between their legs.
HS2 stated, “One interpretation of this burial practice is that it could be the burial of criminals or a type of outcast, although decapitation is well-known elsewhere and appears to have been a normal, albeit marginal, burial rite during the late Roman period.”
Helen Wass, HS2 Ltd’s head of heritage, added, “All human remains uncovered will be treated with dignity, care and respect and our discoveries will be shared with the community.”
In addition to the bodies, ancient coins, ruins of the local village, and other artifacts were found.
The construction project is a new high-speed rail line that will go cross-country, but it is not exactly being greeted kindly by everyone in the area.
Climate change activists have been protesting the new project from the outset.
HS2 has investigated about 100 archeological sites since 2018.
