The moment FBI agents walked out of Mar-a-Lago with cases of documents, Donald Trump claimed that some of the materials were privileged client-attorney documents.
He immediately called for a Special Master to be appointed to review the documents before anything was touched.
The DOJ pushed back at the time, stating that it had a team in place to handle these problems.
Trump still insisted, but his plea was ignored.
We Got This
The DOJ did Trump dirty here.
It knew that he was filing for a Special Master and it easily could have waited until this worked its way through the court.
Instead, it used its own vetting team, which nobody seems to trust anymore, to review the documents.
Just as an announcement was being made that a federal judge was considering the request by Trump, the DOJ decided to tell everyone to pump the brakes.
The DOJ made a filing of its own on the matter, stating, “[T]he Privilege Review Team … identified a limited set of materials that potentially contain attorney-client privileged information, completed its review of those materials, and is in the process of following the procedures set forth in paragraph 84 of the search warrant affidavit to address potential privilege disputes, if any.”
Now, I understand this may be normal procedure, but it is also very understandable why Trump does not trust the DOJ to do the vetting.
What is to stop them from copying the documents to try to find some breadcrumb it can use against Trump?
At this point, I have little doubt the case will eventually land before the Supreme Court to create a landmark precedent regarding presidential powers.
