Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th Congressional District, was arrested Thursday while protesting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the United Nations General Assembly, according to her campaign’s social media posts and media reports.

Shop NowAbout 250 protesters gathered at 1st Avenue and 39th Street in Manhattan, City & State New York reported, and police began making arrests after demonstrators sitting in the roadway refused to move.
Outlets reported roughly 80 to 100 arrests. City & State reported that City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés were also arrested; the Daily Mail reported that actress Susan Sarandon was among those detained.
“Our government has unlimited funds to arm a genocide against Palestinians but tells us there’s nothing left to feed and house our own people,” her campaign account posted. In a statement reported by Bloomberg, she said Netanyahu “belongs at the Hague.”
Avila Chevalier, 32, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated five-term Rep.
Adriano Espaillat in June’s primary in the heavily Democratic district, which covers Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed her in late May.
