At a Saturday town hall, a voter named Tommy asked El-Sayed whether he would disavow the Muslim Brotherhood, following reports about his family’s alleged connections to the group. El-Sayed answered “Yeah, absolutely,” then asked why the question was being put to him, accusing the voter of assuming he held “dual loyalties” because he is Muslim. El-Sayed later shared a clip of the exchange with his followers.

Crawford wrote that the exchange was “the kind of spectacular self own most ppl only dream about triggering.” By Sunday she had removed it, writing that she deleted the post because “it was a violation of CBS News standards. I apologize.” That was the only reason she gave.

The post had drawn calls for her firing from left-leaning commentators, including Democratic consultant Karen Finney, who accused Crawford of boosting a “paid GOP operative.” NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck said those critics “need to grow up.” A CBS spokesperson declined further comment.

El-Sayed’s campaign has called the Muslim Brotherhood claims “racist and untrue.”
