Maher told viewers Friday night. After a profane dismissal of his detractors, he added, “I like these dinners.”
Maher listed subjects he said he challenged Trump on, including the Supreme Court, Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump’s treatment of Barack Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the 2020 election.
The dinner, which also included Stephen A. Smith and Kid Rock, ran more than four hours. Maher said Trump “never lost his temper,” and that if anyone lacked etiquette at the table, “it was me.”
Trump told reporters the dinner was “very informative” and that Maher “likes me a lot more than people understand.”
After their first White House dinner in 2025, Maher called Trump “gracious and measured” in private, then resumed criticizing him.
Trump answered with attacks, calling Maher a “highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT.” Former press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Friday’s first guest, relayed a message from Trump: “Tell him he loved that dinner, and he knows it.”
