A federal judge has ordered Missouri to run November’s election on a Republican-drawn congressional map, hours after the state Supreme Court ordered a return to the previous districts and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene.

Shop NowU.S. District Judge Stephen Clark issued a temporary restraining order backing the new map on Tuesday, writing that plaintiffs faced “irreparable harm” because “many Missouri voters would have to cast their general-election votes for candidates whom they had no role in nominating.”
The legislature redrew the map at Trump’s urging, making Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City district more Republican. It was used in August’s primaries before the state Supreme Court blocked it, ruling Missouri must return to the earlier lines because a citizen referendum petition had qualified for the ballot.
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said “a federal-election-administration disaster is unfolding in Missouri” and warned of “unprecedented chaos.”
The state, she added, is “genuinely unsure whether it can switch its governing congressional map in time.”
On Wednesday the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a stay, saying it either lacked “jurisdiction over the appeal” or that “the stay factors have not been met.”
The challengers returned to the Supreme Court, where Justice Brett Kavanaugh has asked for a response.
