Shop NowHouse Dems got a whiff of the Manchin deal, and now they are threatening to tank the budget legislation if it includes the Manchin concession.
This could block the last hope Democrats have of getting legislation passed before the midterm elections.
Not Happening
A total of 71 Democrats have revolted in the House.
They are upset that Manchin has a stipulation in the new budget legislation that would streamline the approval of leases for gas and oil.
Not only are they pushing back, but it sounds like there could be legislation in the future to classify MAGA supporters as domestic terrorists.
Read the wording of this letter and tell me if I am wrong.
It stated, “In the face of the existential threats like climate change and MAGA extremism, House and Senate leadership has a greater responsibility than ever to avoid risking a government shutdown by jamming divisive policy riders into a must-pass continuing resolution.
“Permitting reform hurts already-overburdened communities, puts polluters on an even faster track, and divides the caucus.”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) added, “We will be united in defeating the separate Manchin’ permitting reforms’ that will accelerate climate change and pollute Black, brown, Indigenous and low-income communities.
“Manchin went back on his word to get [Build Back Better] done, and we owe him nothing now.”
In a way, this could be good for Republicans.
If Democrats have all this infighting, the time they have remaining to pass legislation could be filled with bickering and blocking each other.
If that continues until January, we are fairly confident we will get back one chamber, which is all we need to put up the blockade and turn Biden into a lame duck.
