The final founding member of one of the most iconic bands of the 1960s and 1970s is gone.

Gary Rossington, the original guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed away.

He was 71 years old.

Sad Day

The death of Rossington was confirmed by a band representative.

The statement read, “It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today.

“Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does.

“Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

The cause of death has not been released.

However, Rossington has been having health problems over the last few years.

In 2015, he had a heart attack, then had surgery in 2019.

Rossington was aboard the ill-fated plane crash that killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant in 1977.

A decade after the crash, the band was reformed with Johnny Van Zant taking the lead, and Rossington was right there for every second of it.

The band’s most iconic song, “Free Bird,” was on the debut album in 1973 and remains one of the more popular songs among rock fans today.

Rest in peace, Gary.
