Shop NowICE confirmed the operation to Fox News and announced several arrests. DHS named four Haitian nationals, Rubstony Junior Theodore, Wilbert Jean Baptiste, Louis Jean and Jhensly Charles, along with Cuban national Elizabeth Povea Rodriguez, who DHS said was previously convicted of disorderly conduct.
DHS said Theodore’s record includes arrests for larceny and trespassing.
“Illegal aliens who have no right to be here in the first place are the last people who should be using SNAP benefits and other forms of welfare,”
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement. “These programs are for Americans only.” He called those apprehended so far “just a drop in the bucket,” and DHS described the arrests as the opening of a sustained, large-scale operation.
DHS and ICE announced the operation. Fox News did not report a total arrest count or the value of benefits allegedly received, and those named are accused, not convicted, of SNAP fraud.
Federal law generally bars people living in the country illegally from receiving SNAP, though certain categories of lawfully present noncitizens may qualify.
