Five Arrested Near U.S. Bomber Base in England as Police Probe Possible Iran Link

Five men were arrested on Sunday near RAF Fairford, the base in southwest England where the U.S. houses its strategic bombers for Europe, and counterterrorism police are investigating whether Iran is linked to the suspected plot, Fox News reports.

According to the report, the men were first held on suspicion of offenses under Britain’s Explosives Act before being arrested on terrorism charges.

Armed police held a cordon near Whelford, Gloucestershire.

President Trump said U.S. authorities had monitored the suspects. “We had them under view for a long time, and we got them,” he said.

Andrew Badger, a former Defense Intelligence Agency official, said that five suspects and three reported vans pointed to “a very complex, highly orchestrated operation.”

He described one possible scenario: “They could have tried to use a VBIED or a vehicle-borne explosive device where the first van could have gone off at the front gate.”

Fox News also cited reports that the base went to Delta alert, its highest security state. Former Trump White House official Morgan Murphy said that if the trail leads to Tehran, “it will be found.”

The possible Iran connection remains under investigation. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has warned that any base used to attack Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target.
