A former Democratic Bronx assemblyman campaigned alongside Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman at a Bronx diner, as Blakeman courts disaffected Democrats in his bid to unseat Gov. Kathy Hochul, Fox News Digital reported.

“They’re not Democrats. They’re socialists and communists,” former Assemblyman Stephen Kaufman told Fox News Digital.

He accused Hochul of moving “harder and harder to the left” and warned that Democrats are “rapidly becoming a house of hatred” that no longer welcomes moderates.

Fox did not report that Kaufman has changed his party registration. It describes him as a former Democratic lawmaker rallying for the Republican nominee.

Several Bronx voters at the Crosstown Diner event told Fox they were backing Blakeman, citing rising costs, public safety and the party’s progressive direction. “I’m a registered Democrat. Ask me if I vote that way,” one said.

Blakeman, who has President Trump’s endorsement, said Hochul has raised taxes and raised utility rates 48 times.

He said lifelong Democrats who have never voted Republican tell him they are voting for him. He pledged to cut taxes and utility bills and pointed to his record as Nassau County executive.

Fox said it reached out to Hochul’s office for comment. No response appears in the article.
