A judge in Las Vegas on Tuesday sentenced Duane “Keffe D” Davis to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur, CBS News reports.
Judge Carli Kierny said Davis, 63, will receive credit for time already served.
Davis was convicted in August of murder with a deadly weapon. He had pleaded not guilty.
At the hearing he spoke only briefly, asking that belongings police took from his home, including his pictures, be returned to him, and saying he had nothing more to add.
Shakur was shot while stopped at a red light in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996, and died six days later.
The case went unsolved for years until Davis began speaking publicly about being inside the white Cadillac that pulled up beside Shakur’s vehicle. He described his role in a 2019 memoir.
Prosecutors argued Davis went “hunting” for Shakur in retaliation for a beating of Davis’ nephew.
His attorney, Michael Sanft, countered that no evidence beyond Davis’ own statements placed him in Las Vegas that night. Prosecutors said Davis was the only one of the four men in the Cadillac still alive at the time of his 2023 arrest.
