Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress because of voter opposition to the war in Iran, CBS News reported.
In a post on X, his first public comments since the midterms, Vance wrote, “The reason we lost is the war.” He challenged anyone who disagreed to argue openly that losing the Senate was a cost worth paying.
Vance said many voters who backed him and President Trump in 2024 voted for Democrats this year for four reasons: ending the war, the cost of living and inflation, putting America first, and changing the U.S. relationship with Israel.
He argued that turnout was not the main problem and said the party’s economic message likely fell short in the final weeks of the campaign.
Trump has defended the war. In a Fox News interview on Tuesday, he suggested it was partly to blame for the losses but said people understand the importance of what he has done.
He launched the conflict in late February, pledging it would last four to five weeks. It is now in its eighth month.
Democrats are expected to hold at least 54 Senate seats, according to CBS News.
