White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow for three hours on Saturday, then traveled to Kyiv for two rounds of talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday.
“We’ve had very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we’re very encouraged,” Witkoff said. Kushner said the aim was a “durable peace” rather than a pause in the fighting.
A White House official said the Moscow session covered “substantive plans for next steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks.”
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the two sides “formulated a number of ideas regarding possible paths to a settlement” and also discussed prospective U.S.-Russia economic arrangements he called “mutually beneficial.” Neither side detailed the proposals.
Both militaries paused strikes around the visit. Russia held a three-day pause on strikes against Kyiv; Ukraine halted its own strikes until Monday.
A senior Ukrainian official, speaking anonymously, said the Kyiv talks focused on “how to get through the winter and what can be done before then.”
Zelenskyy has said he wants a “just, fair peace” with terms that prevent Russia from resuming its offensive.
National security advisers from Britain, France and Germany joined further talks Sunday.
