I’m one of those people who splits his time between the Midwest and Florida. When it gets to a certain time of year my wife and I will decide it’s too darned cold at home and head south for a few months.
We have a nice camper and spend our days enjoying ourselves. One of the ways that we enjoy ourselves the most is when Florida Sheriff Grady Judd comes on television to give a press conference.
This guy could have been a standup comedian if he hadn’t chosen to take the path of law enforcement. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a guy that’s all jokes and unserious in his job. I have watched enough of his press conferences to know that he’s serious when it warrants it.
But there’s something to be said for someone who has a sense of humor and lets it out for the public to see.
It helps people realize that police officers are regular folks like you and me. Take for instance one story that he told recently during a press conference. A couple of burglars had broken into a home in the area and were beginning to parse out what they were going to steal from honest people.
Well, one of these two thieves called 911. You know, the number that almost assures you that a cop will be showing up.
So they continued ransacking the home when the police did what they do when people call 911 and hang up…they showed up.
One of the burglars actually said that the hangup on 911 was intentional. Yes, they did it on purpose. I still can’t believe it.
According to Sheriff Judd, the two crooks said that they called 911 hoping that a deputy would help them move “their” stuff to a storage unit and then drive them to the airport.
Come on now, I have seen cops let people off with a warning, I’ve even seen cops give passes to people just because they looked like they needed a break. What I’ve never seen are cops helping criminals who called 911 on themselves flee the scene of the crime.
You have to admit, there are some dumb criminals out there. Not many of them are at the level of stupidity that these wannabe burglars are.
The way he told the story is something that I wish everyone could see. You could tell that Sheriff Judd simply could not believe that the things he was saying were actually true.
But people being the way that they are sometimes there will never be a shortage of stupid criminals in the world.
