Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday, his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement released Sunday.

According to Herwitt, Murphy began feeling numbness in his arm Saturday afternoon while at his son’s hockey game.

“He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment,” Herwitt said.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”

Murphy, 53, is not on the ballot in the midterm elections but has spent the past several weeks campaigning for Democrats as the party tries to retake the Senate majority.

He had been scheduled to campaign for Democrats in New Hampshire on Sunday.

He has served in the Senate since 2013 and has been viewed as a potential candidate in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary.

Fox News reported the news Sunday afternoon, citing Herwitt’s statement. The statement did not say what caused the stroke or how long Murphy is expected to remain in the hospital.
