Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said Sunday that what Democrats did in Alaska’s U.S. Senate race was a mistake, while arguing it was legal and opposing a federal investigation.
On CBS’ “Face the Nation,” moderator Margaret Brennan noted that the Justice Department has said it may challenge certification of the race, and that Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy of Montana has said Mary Peltola should not be seated if she wins “in a fraudulent manner.”
Brennan said Peltola denies knowing about the effort to stack the ballot, though an aide told The New York Times she did.
Sanders said the move “seems to me to be pretty dumb” but added, “it’s not illegal.”
He compared it to Ohio, where he said a Republican super PAC is funding a candidate claiming to be a socialist in order to take votes from Sherrod Brown, calling that “a stupid thing to do.”
Asked whether Alaska should be investigated, Sanders said no. “The federal government does not get involved in state elections,” he said, adding that it was “a little bit absurd” for a president who denied losing the 2020 election to decide what counts as fair.
