Doug Emhoff has privately told people he would prefer that his wife, former Vice President Kamala Harris, not mount another presidential campaign, according to a Wall Street Journal exclusive summarized by the Daily Caller.
The claim rests on the Journal’s unnamed sources, described as people aware of the discussions.
Emhoff has not said so publicly, and the Daily Caller’s account includes no comment from him or from Harris. The Journal also reported that friends of Emhoff still expect him to stand behind her if she enters the race.
Some donors have told Harris that a 2028 victory looks unlikely, the Journal reported.
Even so, she has been courting major contributors, adding staff and traveling to competitive states for Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterms. The Journal said she still leads most early Democratic primary polls.
Harris has not announced a decision. She told the BBC “I am not done,” as reported by the Associated Press, while insisting she has not made up her mind.
Gov. Gavin Newsom, long seen as a likely contender, told CNN he would not run if she does.
Emhoff has returned to private life and is practicing law again at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, the Daily Beast reported.
