A Canadian cybersecurity executive who negotiates with ransomware hackers has been arrested on federal charges in Pennsylvania, Fox Business reports, but authorities have not said whether the arrest is tied to the FBI’s pursuit of a hacking group.
Edward Dubrovsky, 54, was arrested Thursday in the Philadelphia area, according to federal court documents cited by Reuters.
The records list charges of conspiracy to threaten the confidentiality of information to extort money and interference with commerce. The underlying case, in the Eastern District of Texas, is sealed, so the specific conduct alleged remains unclear.
A judge ordered him held pending a detention hearing in Texas, and a Friday order directed U.S. Marshals to transport him there.
The arrest comes as the FBI investigates ShinyHunters, a group that claimed to have stolen information on nearly every FBI employee.
On Friday, FBI Director Kash Patel said agents had arrested “another suspected co-conspirator” of the group, without naming the suspect.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed that Dubrovsky is the person Patel referenced, or that his case is connected to ShinyHunters. His LinkedIn profile lists an affiliation with CyberSteward, a firm that advertises negotiating with threat actors.
