California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order directing state agencies to refer to the technology only as “artificial intelligence” or “AI,” one day after President Donald Trump moved the federal government to the term “Super Intelligence,” Breitbart reports, crediting Politico for part of its account.
Trump had directed federal agencies to adopt the new wording, saying the technology is “not artificial, we all agree on that.”
The change came alongside a document titled the “White House Accord on Super Intelligence: A Joint Commitment on Frontier SI Responsibilities,” signed by Google chief executive Sundar Pichai, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI president Greg Brockman and Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang.
Newsom answered with a jab. “Super intelligence is clearly not coming from the White House — that’s why California continues to lead,” he said.
The order applies to California’s state agencies.
Breitbart describes Trump’s move as a directive to the federal government and does not say whether it took the form of an executive order.
Newsom paired the order with new state laws that require layoff notices tied to AI and limit its use in disciplinary actions and firings. Breitbart’s report gives no bill numbers and includes no White House response.
