First Lady Melania Trump stood alongside envoys from Russia and Ukraine at a rare White House news conference, presenting a temporary, limited ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Oleshky region as a possible starting point for a lasting peace, Fox News reported.
Oleshky lies in Ukraine’s Kherson region and is under Russian control.
Trump said both countries had agreed to work with her as an “exclusive intermediary” on the ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and a safe evacuation route for civilians.
She said she learned of the region’s humanitarian crisis in September and asked her representative, Marc Beckman, to engage both sides.
“We have chosen humanity over war,” she said, calling Oleshky “a spark in a world of darkness.” She added: “Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire.”
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev said Vladimir Putin appreciated President Trump’s peace efforts.
Ukrainian official David Arakhamia called the ceasefire the “biggest de-escalation since 2022.” Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, also attended, and Dmitriev met with U.S. officials.
Fox did not report when the ceasefire began, how long it has held, or any figures on aid or evacuations. The article included no reaction from Democrats or other critics of the effort.
