A Minnesota man was sentenced this week to 14 months in prison for spraying Rep. Ilhan Omar with vinegar at a town hall meeting in Minneapolis.
Anthony Kazmierczak, who is in his mid-50s, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen.
He was convicted of assaulting a U.S. officer — the federal charge that covers attacks on federal officials, including members of Congress, while they are carrying out their duties.
The incident took place on January 27, 2026. Kazmierczak sprayed Omar with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water from a syringe while telling her she was “splitting Minnesota apart,” according to CBS News Minnesota. Omar’s security detail tackled him and police arrested him at the scene.
Omar, a Democrat, was not hurt. She continued the town hall after the disruption and finished the meeting.
Kazmierczak told the court his memory of the episode was “fuzzy.” In a written statement to Omar, he said: “I’m sorry if I scared you.”
The sentence was handed down in federal court in Minnesota this week, bringing to a close a case that began with an arrest at the town hall in January.
