Katie Zacharia is being removed as White House press secretary after five days in the job, two U.S. officials told CBS News on Friday.
The New York Times first reported that she had been fired. Sources told CBS she is expected to start a new role in the administration.
Her week included a heavily criticized first and only briefing on Tuesday, when she took questions from three outlets, and questions over whether she had misrepresented herself as a lawyer.
Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine Law School but failed the California bar exam in 2011, which she acknowledged Thursday. She has said she never presented herself as an “attorney at law.”
Shortly before the news broke, President Trump said the press had been “so nasty to her” and that he had told her that in her position he would reconsider, citing her husband and children.
In a social media post Friday night, Zacharia called Trump kind and gracious and said it was an honor to work for him.
Trump named her one week earlier to replace Karoline Leavitt, who stepped aside in August.
The White House has not said who will succeed her. Her five days invited comparison to Anthony Scaramucci’s 11 days as communications director.
