A Senate seat in Kansas, a state that has elected Republicans to the chamber for nearly a century, has become more competitive than the party planned for, Fox News reports.

Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, who won by 11 points in 2020, faces Democrat Adam Hamilton, senior pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection and a former registered Republican running as a centrist.

The Cook Political Report and Fox News have both moved the race from “Likely Republican” to “Lean Republican.” The report cites no polling or fundraising figures.

Sen. Tim Scott, who leads the Senate Republican campaign arm, called Kansas “more competitive than I’d like to see it,” adding that “we’re gonna win in Kansas.”

Vice President JD Vance has rallied for Marshall, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune plans to travel to the state.

Hamilton spokesperson Tyson Brody said his “message of leading from the middle and working together is resonating,” and accused Marshall of “voting to slash health care.”

Marshall adviser Brent Robertson called Hamilton “a carbon copy of every other woke liberal in Washington.”

Republicans are circulating a six-year-old sermon in which Hamilton said cattle produce more carbon dioxide than other crops. Kansas is the nation’s third-largest cattle producer.
