Jeremy Thomas, the British producer behind “The Last Emperor,” has died at 77.
His publicist told the Press Association he “passed away peacefully” on Friday at his country home in Oxfordshire, surrounded by family. No cause was given.
Thomas produced Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 epic, which won nine Academy Awards including best picture, and went on to work with the director again on “The Sheltering Sky,” “Little Buddha,” “Stealing Beauty,” and “The Dreamers.”
His career began on the cutting-room floor, and his first producing credit was the 1976 Australian outlaw film “Mad Dog Morgan.”
Across five decades, he backed an unusually international roster of directors: Nicolas Roeg on “Bad Timing,” “Eureka,” and “Insignificance,” Nagisa Oshima on “Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence,” and later David Cronenberg, Jonathan Glazer, Stephen Frears, Takashi Miike, Matteo Garrone, and Ben Wheatley, whose “High-Rise” he produced in 2015. Other credits include “Sexy Beast” and “A Dangerous Method.”
The European Film Academy gave him its award for outstanding European achievement in world cinema in 2006, and he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2009 New Year Honours.
He was still working: “The Good Boy” was released in 2025, and “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo” is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.
