Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., has formally introduced legislation that would dismantle the Department of Homeland Security, abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement and eliminate Customs and Border Protection, including the Border Patrol, Fox News reported.
Her “Reimagining Safety Act” would replace DHS with a new “Department of Community Safety.”
The TSA and Coast Guard would move to the Department of Transportation, and FEMA and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to the new department. Customs functions would go to the Treasury and certain immigration functions to the Justice Department.
The bill would also bar federal border wall funding from fiscal year 2027 and order the Guantánamo Bay detention facility closed within 60 days.
Its original cosponsors are Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Jim McGovern, D-Mass.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last month the idea is “NEVER going to happen.” Ramirez said Americans “wake up with a new reason to dismantle DHS, reimagine safety, and build something that honors our shared humanity.”
The bill would have to pass Congress and be signed into law to take effect. None of its changes are in force.
A DHS spokesperson said Ramirez “should be thanking our law enforcement” rather than vilifying it.
