Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has answered Vice President JD Vance’s claim that he is already running for president, suggesting the criticism reflects insecurity.
“In my experience, people engage in political bomb-throwing when they’re feeling insecure,” Cruz told Politico in a phone interview Saturday, according to Fox News. “So he’s welcome to make whatever comments he likes.”
Vance made the accusation Thursday in an NBC News interview. “It is really obvious to me that, at this very moment, Ted Cruz is running for president,”
Vance said. “At this moment, I’m not. I’m trying to help elect Republicans.”
Cruz told Politico his attention is on the midterms. “I’m going to keep focusing on the midterms and helping us win on Election Day in the next 30 days,” he said.
He added that no Republican has campaigned for more Senate, House and gubernatorial candidates over the last 10 years, and noted he spent a full day on the road with Vance during Vance’s 2022 Senate race in Ohio. “I was very glad he won that race,” Cruz said.
Asked about the 2028 race in August, Cruz told MS NOW, “I’ll certainly be part of the discussion.” Vance is scheduled to hold a rally in Alaska on Monday.
